The Pool Series

My paintings are bright, with dramatic contrasts between the saturated underpainting and the figures.

My pool series started as an exploration of complementary colour combinations that could represent the way our eyes interpret colour at different times of the day. I've used a lime green background to depict dawn, cerulean blue for midday, and brilliant pink for the afternoon - when the sun's rays are longer, and more of the red is visible to the human eye.

Colour really excites me in my work.  Seeing and working with colour in context is fun problem-solving for me. The science behind fluorescence is a huge fascination for me - I LOVE that things that have fluorescence are absorbing light at one wavelength and emitting it at a different wavelength - that is CHANGING light to MAKE IT BETTER - this reminds me of a quote from William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, who said:

“I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men, they are far superior and always have been. Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home.”

We see this all the time - especially in the workplace - where women often do the caring work - nursing, teaching, early learning and naturally in the role of mother - this is largely women's work because it requires the person doing it to do the "make greater" thing.

I bring the feminine perspective with my work and celebrate this aspect in women by using fluorescent colour to symbolise this quality in women.

Honor Bowden crafts her art with the warmth and light of her Gold Coast roots. In her impressionistic landscapes and botanicals, she weaves the calm of early seaside mornings with the lively energy of sunlit beach afternoons.

When not in her home studio, Honor is often found along the local shores with her kids and dog, where rock pool treasures and sunset skies fuel her next creations.
